A Mindful Approach to Glowing Skin Care

Who doesn’t love beautiful skin? How well you relax, refresh and restore yourself, plays an important role in skin health. Read more for simple natural tips to create glowing, radiant skin.

This post offers easy lifestyle tips. A different post will cover nutrition tips and an update on cutting edge information about the skin’s microbiome.

1. Try mindfulness meditation. Too much worrying is bad for your skin! Increasing mindfulness can reduce anxiety about appearance and reduce distress in general, leading to less inflammation and a more beautiful appearance. Certain skin conditions, like acne, eczema and psoriasis, are related to stress; flare-ups are often associated with distress and having a skin condition is associated with higher stress. Studies suggest that having higher levels of mindfulness helps to lower ruminating about skin conditions and to reduce anxiety about one’s appearance.

2. Get beauty sleep. It’s called beauty sleep for a reason—it works. Your body restores itself and regenerates new skin cells when you sleep. Reducing sleep accelerates aging because you rob your body of this chance for rejuvenation. Lost sleep cannot be made up after a week has passed.

3. Stay hydrated. Consider the raisin vs. the grape. You rather your face look like the grape, right? Drinking enough water supports the natural barrier function of the skin and reduces skin dryness. Fine lines “pop” when skin is dry and rough—that’s the raisin look. Studies show that drinking enough water is critical not only to your skin’s health but also to its elasticity, smoothness, softness and ability to return to its original state.

4. Use a humidifier. It’s not just about the water in your body, the water in the air matters too. Keep that grape from becoming a raisin, right? Depending where you live, humidifiers can help year round. In desert like conditions, humidifiers help. In many climates, cold winter weather and heated indoor air zaps skin moisture. Use a humidifier, especially in your bedroom and office, to replace air moisture. Add essential oils for extra self-care. Not only will your skin retain a healthy glow, this also reduces chances of getting colds and flu. Aim for humidity levels of 40% to 60%. Many sensors and home apps provide humidity level readings.

5. Exfoliate. Make this part of your daily routine with a light exfoliator. Products that exfoliate enhance the sloughing off of dead surface skin cells to improve skin’s smooth appearance.

6. Use sun protection. What a great reason to buy a sexy wide brimmed hat or visor to shield your face and delicate décolletage. Sun exposure can damage skin cell DNA, affecting the cell’s ability to reproduce. Wear fun, sexy sunglasses to protect thin skin around eyes. While scientists continue to evaluate chemical hazards in sunscreens, enjoy mineral powders that block the sun’s UV rays or choose thick preparations such as zinc oxide that are not absorbed internally.

7. Take deep paced breathing breaks. Restore your happy, youthful glow. Manage tense or angry feelings or even feelings of deep fatigue with paced deep breathing breaks. This instant refresher revives you and restores your inner Audrey Hepburn. Ideally, inhale for 6 seconds and exhale for six seconds, but you may need to work up to this. Aim for a 10-minute practice for full benefits. My video below will guide you through it.
