WHAT ARE THE BEST EXERCISES FOR A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP?

EVIDENCE BASED

Are you craving a really good night’s sleep? With days growing longer, you can take advantage of some outdoor time and improve your sleep. Sleep researchers have identified the best exercises to help you sleep better. Good quality and quantity sleep is essential to a strong immune system and good health and while all physical activity helps sleep, some are better than others.

Move your way to better sleep.

“Although previous research has shown that lack of exercise is associated with poor sleep, the results of this study were surprising,” says lead investigator Michael A. Grandner, PhD, director of the Sleep & Health Research Program at the University of Arizona College of Medicine.

“Not only does this study show that those who get exercise simply by walking are likely to have better sleep habits, but these effects are even stronger for more purposeful activities, such as running and yoga, and even gardening and golf. It was also interesting that people who receive most of their activity from housework and childcare were more likely to experience insufficient sleep. We know that home and work demands are some of the main reasons people lose sleep.”

Check out activities most likely to improve healthy sleep:

  1. Aerobic activities/calisthenics.

  2. Cycling.

  3. Running.

  4. Strength training.

  5. Yoga/Pilates.

  6. Gardening.

  7. Golf.

Many of us feel exhausted at the end of the day, but what most are experiencing is mental fatigue. When you physically exert yourself and your body is equally tired, you’re able to tap into the restorative magic of deep sleep where the body renews and repairs cells and the brain refreshes itself.
