CHEAP EFFECTIVE TONING AND STRENGTH TRAINING EQUIPMENT: Easy Exercise To Do at Your Desk

Owning one of these exercise bands or tubes is like putting a gym in your pocket. These are among the best cheap, effective equipment for exercise that I know. Keep in your desk drawer at your workstation or pack in your suitcase for a quick set any time.

I recommend a selection (one medium and one heavy resistance) of bands or tubes at least 5 feet (or 1.5 meters) long for the most versatility. These are especially great for upper body toning. Depending on your strength, start light and advance to the heaviest weight band. I’ve trained strong men using these bands; they’ve been able to get a good challenge.

Use exercise bands or tubing with my Strength and Toning Deck or The Walking Deck or Fitness 9 to 5, for lots of easy exercise ideas.

One exercise favorite to strengthen and tone your upper back for better posture—Hold one end of the band in each hand with arms in front at shoulder height, palms facing down. Inhale. As you exhale, bend elbows and squeeze shoulder blades together as you pull elbows back. Keep shoulders relaxed and arms at shoulder height. Inhale as you return to starting position.

Repeat 10 to 15 times to fatigue. If you can do more reps, use a heavier band or choke up a bit more (shorten the band) to increase resistance, so your muscles are tired by the last rep. This strengthens your mid-upper back for a more open and uplifted posture.

I’ve personally used TheraBand® products with good results, as well as those sold by STOTT Pilates. I’ve not tried other brands, but that doesn’t mean that they’re not effective. Get LATEX-free bands if you have latex sensitivity.
